Updating Wind River Linux

Wind River Linux Getting Started, LTS 21

To obtain product updates, you update the Git repositories and rebuild your platform project image(s).

The update process includes product-specific updates to your mirror and platform project Git repository and documentation updates to your optional documentation Git repository.

A local mirror repository provides the latest configuration content to one or more platform projects in your overall environment. For additional information, see Creating a Mirror for Local Project Builds.

If you are updating a development environment that uses a mirror repository as the basis for other platform projects, you must first perform this procedure on the mirror project repository. Once the update is complete, perform this procedure for each platform project repository that you want to update.

To install an online update, follow the steps below. For additional information on product updates, see Product Updates Overview.

To upgrade an offline installation, you must download the offline install again, and extract it to the same location as the original version, replacing the existing install, before completing the steps below.
Note:

If you can't replace the original version, extract the download to a new location and then remove the wrlinux-x directory before re-cloning it from the new extraction point and running the setup.sh instructions below.

Once the offline installation is updated, you must prepare it for use as a Git mirror using the instructions in Creating a Mirror for Local Project Builds.

  • a previously cloned Wind River Linux LTS 21 platform project directory repository or mirror

  • a built platform project to update, where the setup.sh script was previously run

  1. Navigate to your platform project directory or mirror directory repository.
    $ cd my-project/wrlinux-x
  2. From projectDir/wrlinux-x, update the repository.
    Note:

    Before you begin, ensure that no Git operations are in-progress on your Linux host system.

    From projectDir/wrlinux-x, update the repository.

    $ git pull

    This will update the project directory repository with the latest content.

  3. Navigate back to your project directory.
    $ cd ..
  4. Obtain the options used to create or reconfigure the platform project.

    This information is available in the projectDir/README file using the following command:

    $ head -n 5 README
    This is a Wind River Linux build project. It was constructed by the setup
    program using the following arguments:

    --machines qemux86-64

    In this example, --machines qemux86-64 is the only option used when setup.sh was last run. If you are updating a mirror, your output will include options specific to creating a mirror project.

  5. Rerun the setup.sh tool with the options from the previous step.
    $ wrlinux-x/setup.sh --machine qemux86-64

    The tool will display a message when the update includes changes to the bblayers.conf.sample or local.conf.sample files, to prompt you to update the files in your build directory to ensure that your platform project configuration matches the new product update.

    Note:

    The following steps are for platform project repositories only. If you are updating a mirror, you are done. Perform this procedure in its entirety for each platform project repository that uses the mirror.

  6. Set up the development environment.

    This step must be performed each time you work on your project.

    1. Run the environment-setup script from the project directory.

      This step augments your Linux development host system tools with specific versions required by the build system.

      $ . ./environment-setup-x86_64-wrlinuxsdk-linux
    2. Run the oe-init-build-env script.

      This step configures your development environment for a specific build directory. Run the following command without options to set the default projectDir/build as the build directory.

      $ . ./oe-init-build-env
      If you want to use an alternative directory, append the directory name or path to the command, for example:
      $ . ./oe-init-build-env newBuildDir

      Once the command completes, the terminal will automatically navigate to the build directory specified. You are now ready to develop your platform project.

  7. Update the build directory conf/local.conf and build directory conf/bblayers.conf as necessary to ensure product updates do not impact your platform project build.

    Add layers in the projectDir/config/bblayers.conf.sample file that are not included in your build directory conf/bblayers.conf file. Since these files are in the build directory, and not the platform project directory, they must be updated manually.

  8. Rebuild your platform project image to complete the update process.
    $ bitbake wrlinux-image-small

    If you receive build warning concerning missing dependencies or other similar issues, it may be necessary to manually resolve issues related to dependencies and manually clean-up the build directories.

  9. Optionally update each platform project individually.

    This step is a reminder to update individual platform project repositories after the mirror repository update is complete. If your development environment uses a mirror repository, perform this procedure on each platform project that uses the mirror repository.
